More than seventy years have passed since Indonesia and France established diplomatic relations in 1947. Recently, in a gesture of friendship and mutual respect, French President Emmanuel Macron was warmly welcomed in Jakarta with a grand state reception. The grounds of Merdeka Palace and the area surrounding the National Monument (Monas) were filled with approximately 3,000 students from elementary to high school levels, dressed impeccably and waving the flags of both Indonesia and France. The motorcade transporting President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron made its way to the palace from Monas, escorted under tight security, enhancing the ceremonial ambiance.

President Macron greeted the students enthusiastically upon his arrival at Merdeka Palace, where he was welcomed officially by President Prabowo Subianto. The two leaders walked together to the ceremonial grounds, accompanied by the national anthems of both nations and a 21-gun salute as a formal gesture of respect. Prabowo and Macron proceeded to inspect the honor guard under Jakarta’s clear blue sky, with Macron acknowledging the spirited students waving mini flags in the palace courtyard.

The event was attended by ministers from the Red and White Cabinet, along with Prabowo’s son, Ragowo Hediprasetyo. Macron’s itinerary in Indonesia included a visit to the Military Academy in Magelang and a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Borobudur Temple, highlighting the shared cultural and educational values of the two countries. Following the welcoming ceremony, the two heads of state engaged in a closed-door bilateral meeting to discuss various strategic partnerships, underscoring the deepening ties between Indonesia and France.
